Complete Timeline

18
1918 Pre-Umbrella

Spencer Estate Constructed

Lord Oswell E. Spencer commissions the Spencer Estate mansion in the Arklay Mountains — the same structure that will later serve as Umbrella's primary viral research laboratory. Spencer is 8 years old.

66
1966 Pre-Umbrella

Umbrella Pharmaceuticals Founded

Oswell E. Spencer, Edward Ashford, and James Marcus co-found Umbrella Pharmaceuticals. The company's stated purpose is vaccine development. Its true agenda from day one is the Progenitor virus — a mutagenic compound discovered in an African flower, Stairway of the Sun.

78
1978 Early Umbrella

T-Virus Research Begins

Dr. William Birkin joins Umbrella's NEST laboratory in Raccoon City at age 16. He begins work under James Marcus on the T-virus — a derivative of the Progenitor virus designed for biological weaponization. Birkin's prodigy-level progress accelerates Umbrella's WMD timetable by a decade.

88
1988 Early Umbrella

James Marcus Assassinated

Spencer orders Albert Wesker and William Birkin to eliminate James Marcus after Marcus's Queen Leech experiments produce uncontrollable results. Marcus is shot and his research archived. Spencer takes sole control of Umbrella.

91
1991 Mid Umbrella

G-Virus Project Initiated

William Birkin, now Umbrella NEST's lead researcher, begins the G-virus project — a mutagenic compound designed to continuously evolve its host rather than stabilize it. His ultimate goal is to create a biologically immortal super-being. Birkin becomes increasingly obsessed, refusing to share research findings.

93
1993 Mid Umbrella

Alyssa Ashcroft Joins Umbrella

Alyssa Ashcroft — daughter of co-founder Edward Ashford — joins Umbrella as a junior research biochemist at the Raccoon City NEST laboratory. She is assigned to T-virus derivative research. Over the following years she grows increasingly concerned by the moral implications of Umbrella's work.

96
1996 Mid Umbrella

Alyssa Discovers Elpis Compound Documents

While auditing archived research files, Alyssa Ashcroft discovers documentation for Project Elpis — a classified program to weaponize a next-generation mutagenic compound derived from both T-virus and G-virus strains. Unlike previous Umbrella bioweapons, Elpis is designed to be globally transmissible via atmospheric dispersal. Alyssa begins secretly copying documents.

96
1996 Mid Umbrella

Victor Gideon Assigned to Project Elpis

Victor Gideon, a rising Umbrella executive with direct connections to Spencer's inner circle, is formally assigned as Project Director of Project Elpis. Gideon believes Elpis represents Umbrella's 'ultimate evolution' philosophy taken to its logical conclusion — not a weapon, but a forced speciation event for humanity.

97
1997 Mid Umbrella

Alyssa Ashcroft Defects — Evidence Package Sent

Alyssa Ashcroft, pregnant with her daughter Grace, defects from Umbrella and sends a comprehensive evidence package — including Project Elpis documents and Birkin's G-virus research notes — to three government contacts: US-STRATCOM, a WHO field agent, and a classified BSAA precursor organization. Two of three packages are intercepted. The BSAA precursor receives the third.

97
1997 Mid Umbrella

Grace Ashcroft Born

Grace Ashcroft is born. Her mother Alyssa is living under a false identity in a safe house. Grace grows up knowing nothing of her mother's past or Umbrella's existence.

98
1998 Raccoon City Incident

T-Virus Outbreak — Raccoon City

William Birkin, fatally shot by Umbrella Cleaners attempting to seize the G-virus sample, injects himself with G-virus as his final act. The T-virus spreads from NEST through the sewage system and into Raccoon City's water supply. The city falls within 72 hours. Umbrella operatives, the RCPD, and survivors — including Leon S. Kennedy on his first day as an RPD officer — attempt to escape.

98
1998 Raccoon City Incident

Raccoon City Destroyed

The US government authorizes a thermobaric strike on Raccoon City to contain the T-virus outbreak. The city is destroyed at 0647 hours on October 1, 1998. Approximately 100,000 civilians perish. The incident becomes the defining moment in bioterrorism history — the event that eventually leads to the founding of the BSAA.

98
1998 Raccoon City Incident

Alyssa Ashcroft Goes Missing

Following the Raccoon City destruction, Alyssa Ashcroft disappears. Intelligence later suggests she was captured by Victor Gideon's private security force in the weeks following the incident. Her daughter Grace is placed with a civilian family by the BSAA precursor organization under Witness Protection protocols.

03
2003 Post-Raccoon

Umbrella Corporations Officially Dissolved

Following the Raccoon City lawsuit and mounting international pressure, Umbrella Pharmaceuticals is officially dissolved. Its assets are seized, its executives prosecuted, and its research vaults supposedly destroyed. Victor Gideon, protected by powerful government contacts, is never publicly charged. Project Elpis continues in a deep black operation.

04
2004 Post-Raccoon

BSAA Founded

The Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance is formally founded as an international counter-bioterrorism organization. Leon S. Kennedy, now a DSO agent, contributes intelligence from the Raccoon City incident to BSAA's founding protocols.

09
2009 Post-Raccoon

Victor Gideon Founds ARK Biopharma

Victor Gideon, operating under a false identity, founds ARK Biopharma — a private medical research company ostensibly focused on trauma treatment. Its underground facility in the ruins adjacent to Raccoon City (built over the original NEST site) serves as the new Project Elpis laboratory. Gideon uses ARK as a front to acquire Elpis-compatible bioweapon components on the black market.

12
2012 Post-Raccoon

Rhodes Hill Care Center Elpis Contamination

Victor Gideon authorizes a covert Elpis-compound atmospheric test at the Rhodes Hill Care Center — a facility located in the quarantine zone adjacent to Raccoon City ruins. Residents are exposed to Elpis via the water supply. The contamination creates the first Elpis-mutant organisms — including the entity later known as The Girl, and the first generation of Blister Borne infected. Gideon covers up the event by classifying the Care Center as a biohazard research site.

15
2015 Post-Raccoon

Grace Ashcroft Recruited by BSAA

Now 18, Grace Ashcroft is approached by BSAA field operative Marcus Chen who reveals her mother Alyssa's true identity and Umbrella connection. Grace, a naturally gifted analyst with inherited biochemistry knowledge from Alyssa's hidden journals, agrees to work with BSAA as a civilian analyst specializing in bioweapon evidence documentation.

17
2017 Pre-Requiem

Project Elpis Reaches Deployment Phase

Victor Gideon announces to his inner circle that Project Elpis is ready for global deployment. The Elpis compound has been refined to a self-replicating aerosol form capable of atmospheric dispersal from a single point. Gideon selects the ruins of Raccoon City as the deployment site — both for symbolic value and because its infrastructure connects to the original Umbrella atmospheric systems.

18
2018 RE9 Requiem Events

Wrenwood Hotel Incident — RE9 Requiem Begins

Leon S. Kennedy investigates reports of bioterrorism activity at the Wrenwood Hotel near the Raccoon City exclusion zone. His investigation leads him to discover Alyssa Ashcroft's evidence package — including the first concrete confirmation of Project Elpis and Victor Gideon's identity. Grace Ashcroft, investigating her mother's disappearance independently, arrives at the hotel simultaneously. The two are forced to cooperate as Elpis-infected overwhelm the hotel.

18
2018 RE9 Requiem Events

Rhodes Hill Care Center Investigation

Leon and Grace separately investigate the Care Center — the site of Gideon's 2012 Elpis test. Grace encounters The Girl (a Biological Memory Construct formed by the 2012 contamination) and recovers critical files from the Director's Office. Leon fights through the Care Center's mutated infected including Chunk — a first-generation Elpis merger organism.

18
2018 RE9 Requiem Events

Return to Raccoon City

Following the Care Center, Leon and Grace enter the ruins of Raccoon City for the first time since the 1998 incident (Leon) and first time ever (Grace). The city's exclusion zone has prevented any civilian access for 20 years. Gideon's forces are embedded throughout. The RPD building and surrounding structures are still largely intact.

18
2018 RE9 Requiem Events

ARK Facility Assault

Leon and Grace infiltrate Gideon's ARK Facility. Grace recovers her mother Alyssa's complete research files — confirming Alyssa was kept alive as a research subject for 20 years after her disappearance. Leon confronts Victor Gideon in the ARK Central Chamber.

18
2018 RE9 Requiem Events

Victor Gideon Defeated — Requiem Ends

Victor Gideon, having injected himself with a stabilized Elpis compound, becomes the final boss of Resident Evil Requiem. Leon and Grace defeat him. Whether the Elpis deployment system is destroyed or Grace recovers Alyssa's files for future analysis depends on the ending chosen. The status of Alyssa Ashcroft herself is left deliberately ambiguous in the Standard and True endings.

Character Profiles

Leon S. Kennedy

Protagonist DSO (Division of Security Operations)
Age: 38 (as of 2018) First appeared: Resident Evil 2 (1998)

Former RPD rookie officer who survived the Raccoon City incident on his first day on the job. Now a senior DSO agent with 20 years of bioterrorism combat experience. Leon specializes in direct combat operations and close-range threat elimination. His connection to Raccoon City is deeply personal — returning to its ruins in RE9 forces him to confront unresolved trauma from the 1998 incident.

Gameplay: Combat-focused character. Uses firearms, Hatchet parry system, and grenades. Sections alternate between heavy action sequences and moderate exploration. Compared to Grace, Leon has higher base durability and more weapon access.
Grace Ashcroft (partner, RE9)Claire Redfield (survivor, RE2)Ada Wong (antagonist/ally, RE4)President Graham (protectee, RE4)

Grace Ashcroft

Protagonist (new to RE9) BSAA Civilian Analyst
Age: 21 (as of 2018) First appeared: Resident Evil Requiem (2026)

Daughter of Umbrella whistleblower Alyssa Ashcroft. Grew up knowing nothing of her heritage until age 18 when BSAA recruited her. Highly intelligent with inherited biochemistry knowledge from Alyssa's hidden journals. Emotionally driven by finding her mother. Her youth and civilian background make her survival situations feel more desperate than Leon's — she is not a trained soldier.

Gameplay: Survival horror-focused character. Uses Freya's Needle machine pistol, blood collector crafting, and environmental problem-solving. Sections emphasize stealth, resource management, and avoiding The Girl. Lower base durability than Leon but the blood collector provides unique healing self-sufficiency.
Alyssa Ashcroft (mother, missing)Leon S. Kennedy (partner, RE9)Victor Gideon (antagonist — responsible for her mother's captivity)Marcus Chen (BSAA mentor)

Victor Gideon

Primary Antagonist ARK Biopharma (founder) / former Umbrella executive
Age: 61 (as of 2018) First appeared: Resident Evil Requiem (2026)

Former Umbrella executive who oversaw Project Elpis from its inception in 1996. Unlike previous RE antagonists motivated by power or revenge, Gideon is a true ideological believer — he genuinely views Elpis as humanity's next evolutionary step. He is not interested in controlling the Elpis survivors; he considers all of them, including himself, acceptable casualties of speciation. Calculating, patient, and cultured, he represents the most philosophically coherent villain in the series since Wesker.

Gameplay: Final boss of RE9 Requiem. Phase 1: humanoid combat with tactical vest and Elpis-enhanced reflexes. Phase 2: full Elpis mutation — orbital core structure, regeneration (Insanity only), vulnerability to piercing weapons.
Alyssa Ashcroft (captive research subject)Leon S. Kennedy (antagonist)Grace Ashcroft (symbol of everything his plan destroys)

The Girl (Shadow Ghost)

Recurring Antagonist / Environmental Hazard None — Biological Memory Construct
Age: Unknown (entity formed 2012) First appeared: Resident Evil Requiem (2026)

A Biological Memory Construct formed by the accumulated biological trauma from the 2012 Elpis contamination at the Rhodes Hill Care Center. She has no independent consciousness — she is an imprint of collective suffering, particularly that of the pediatric patients who died during the contamination. She resembles a young girl because the majority of the contamination victims were children. She is not malevolent by intent — she is a force of biological memory acting out its own dissolution.

Gameplay: Stalker-type boss and recurring hazard in all Grace chapters set in the Care Center. Cannot be harmed by conventional weapons until the Courtyard confrontation. Repelled by light. Stalks by sound.
Grace Ashcroft (primary target)Patient 047 (the child whose death triggered the construct's formation — referenced in files)

Alyssa Ashcroft

Supporting Character (absent but pivotal) Former Umbrella researcher / BSAA informant
Age: 47 (as of 2018, if alive) First appeared: Resident Evil Requiem (2026) — referenced only, not seen in main game

Daughter of Umbrella co-founder Edward Ashford. A gifted biochemist who worked at NEST Raccoon City from 1993 to 1997 before defecting with Project Elpis documents. Captured by Victor Gideon following the Raccoon City incident and held at the ARK Facility for 20 years as a research subject for Elpis compound refinement. Her survival status in the True Ending is deliberately ambiguous — the post-credits scene shows a file marked 'SUBJECT A: TERMINATED' followed by a cut to black.

Gameplay: Not playable. Present only through files, recordings, and Grace's inner monologue.
Grace Ashcroft (daughter)Victor Gideon (captor)Edward Ashford (father, deceased)William Birkin (NEST colleague)

Marcus Chen

Supporting Character BSAA Field Operative
Age: 44 (as of 2018) First appeared: Resident Evil Requiem (2026)

BSAA field operative who recruited Grace Ashcroft. A pragmatic, experienced agent who views Grace as both an asset and a moral responsibility — he recruited her knowing the danger he was placing her in. Accompanies Leon and Grace in the Raccoon City sections before being separated after the T-501 Super Tyrant encounter. His status after Chapter 4 is unknown in the Standard Ending — he appears injured but alive in the True Ending post-credits scene.

Gameplay: NPC ally in Chapters 3–4. Provides contextual dialogue, opens locked doors, and assists in the Super Tyrant encounter (fires RPG for Leon's melee finish).
Grace Ashcroft (recruit/ward)Leon S. Kennedy (field partner)BSAA Command (reports directly)
